Romney, a career investment company chief and former Republican Massachusetts governor before his challenge for the White House, has twice before served on the global hotel chain's board of directors.
"Governor Romney has proven to be an astute, independent director who is fluent in the demands and opportunities of our highly competitive industry. We are fortunate to have him back on our board," said Marriott chief executive Arne Sorenson.
