NATO set to send missiles to Turkey’s border

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen confirmed on Monday that the military alliance is expected to deploy Patriot missiles to Turkey's border as a preventive measure against spillover from Syria’s civil war.

Rasmussen told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that he anticipates that foreign ministers meeting in Brussels on Tuesday would make a decision the same day and expects them to “respond positively” to the Turkish requests.

Now, tigers to be assigned UIDs

KOLKATA: Getting a UID is no longer just a unique human right. Tigers can have it too.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) issued a guideline on Monday, proposing to assign a unique identification (UID) number to each tiger captured through camera traps. The NTCA wants to create a national repository of camera-trap photographs of tigers, and the UIDs will help cut out duplication and give the big cats an exact headcount. Tigers in the Sunderbans, for instance, will have the prefix 'Su' before a number while those in the northeast hills will have 'NE'. Tigers are identified on the basis of stripe patterns obtained through the camera trap images.

Romney rejoins board of Marriott

Romney, a career investment company chief and former Republican Massachusetts governor before his challenge for the White House, has twice before served on the global hotel chain's board of directors.

"Governor Romney has proven to be an astute, independent director who is fluent in the demands and opportunities of our highly competitive industry. We are fortunate to have him back on our board," said Marriott chief executive Arne Sorenson.

Obama warns Assad on chemical weapons

President Obama warned Syrian dictator Bashar Assad on Monday that the use of chemical weapons is "totally unacceptable," and he will be punished if they are deployed against rebel forces.

"The world is watching," Obama said of Assad during a Washington symposium on nuclear non-proliferation. "If you make the tragic mistake of using these weapons, there will be consequences, and you will be held accountable."

Vampire on the loose in Serbia?

ZAROZJE, Serbia (AP) — Get your garlic, crosses and stakes ready: a bloodsucking vampire is on the loose.
Or so say villagers in the tiny western Serbian hamlet of Zarozje, nestled between lush green mountain slopes and spooky thick forests. They say rumors that a legendary vampire ghost has awakened are spreading fear — and a potential tourist opportunity — through the remote village.

A local council warned villagers to put garlic in their pockets and place wooden crosses in their rooms to ward off vampires, although it appeared designed more to attract visitors to the impoverished region bordering Bosnia.

Many of the villagers are aware that Sava Savanovic, Serbia's most famous vampire, is a fairy tale. Still, they say, better to take it seriously than risk succumbing to the vampire's fangs.
